Last week, we learned why Brilliant Nights owner Rick Bequette started his landscape lighting company in Tampa, and why he has loved running his business for over a decade. This week, we’ll find out about some of his favorite outdoor lighting projects and learn a little about what he likes to do in his free time.
What are some favorite projects you’ve worked on?
That’s a tough question because there are lots of different types of projects, and I enjoy them all.
It’s always fun to work on a multi-million dollar home and property where the possibilities are endless.
Landscape lighting for apartments and condominium complexes is enjoyable because the scope of work is larger and often unique to the property, and it’s nice to show the clients the different options that will highlight the uniqueness of their individual complex to set it apart from others.
Coastal projects are a challenge I enjoy because of the need to create turtle-friendly lighting solutions. My jobs on beachfront homes or resorts must be designed to provide adequate lighting for residents and guests while preventing sea turtle hatchlings from becoming confused during nesting season.
Probably the most enjoyable scenario for me is when a client likes our ideas and moves forward with all options presented. These projects (regardless of the size of the project – be it a small home or a large resort) where we didn’t cut any corners are probably my favorite. When we get to illuminate every detail, there is a different level of satisfaction that comes with that. Really good lighting is about detail. Being able to add in that subtle illumination on each featured part of the landscape or architecture is what makes a project feel complete. Perhaps in a future spotlight, we can touch on some specific projects I mentioned today.
What do you like to do on the weekends?
Well, every weekend is different, but I definitely have some favorite activities. I love a motorcycle ride. There’s no better way to press that pause button on life and get your face into the wind and clear your mind. I love it. Sometimes local, sometimes long distance, either way, it’s one of my favorite things to do. We also like camping with the family. We might pull the travel trailer to a campground, probably with a group of friends who also have campers, where we’ll sit around a camp fire, cook together, and relax. Good times with family and friends. We also spend plenty of weekends at home doing home improvement projects or working in the yard. If we’re eating in, I’m probably grilling or using the smoker. If we’re going out for dinner, we like to hit the local restaurants and will occasionally get out and see some live music or find some craft beer. In general, I’m a bit of a busy body, so I don’t spend a whole lot of time sitting on the couch. By the time the weekend is over, I’m usually ready for Monday so I can get some rest!
