Saturday night when we go to bed, we’ll look forward to a longer Sunday in Tampa. After setting our clocks an hour ahead for Daylight Saving, we can finally enjoy an extra hour of Florida sunshine for the next 8 months. The only problem (besides losing an hour of sleep) is if your landscape lighting timer doesn’t get adjusted, you could be paying to illuminate your property in daylight. Here’s how to be sure your lights adjust.
This Sunday, March 11, we will gain an extra hour of glorious Florida sunlight. This means your outdoor lighting system won’t need to kick on until an hour later, so let’s make sure you’re making the appropriate adjustments.
There are different type of timers used for outdoor lighting, so the changes you’ll need to make depend on the timer you have. A newer landscape lighting system that installed in the past few years will probably automatically adjust for daylight saving time, so you won’t need to make any changes.
An older outdoor lighting system with a manual timer will need to be adjusted. Here’s what to do:
- Find your transformer, located outside near your utilities or inside your garage. Unlatch the transformer box to find your timer.
- To adjust the time, rotate the dial clockwise one hour (you’ll see the correct time in the window in the middle of the timer).
- The green pin indicates when the timer is set to turn on and the red pin is when it will turn off. So you can also adjust these pins to change the times that you want the lights to turn on and off.
